Curriculum Vitae

Dr. Ilja Arts is currently working as a an Assistant Professor of Epidemiology and is involved in research on the effects of ATP in cancer and inflammatory diseases. She received an MSc in Human Nutrition from Wageningen University in 1994 and an MSc in Epidemiology from the Netherlands Institute for Health Sciences (NIHES) at Erasmus University Rotterdam in 2000. In 2001, she obtained her PhD in Human Nutrition from Wageningen University. The title of her thesis was “Dietary catechins and their potentially protective role in cardiovascular diseases and cancer”. She has worked for 9 years as a research scientist at RIKILT – Institute of Food Safety, in Wageningen, The Netherlands and was involved in several research programs on polyphenols from the Commission of the European Communities. In 2004 she received a NWO VENI - Innovational Research Grant to study the behaviour of dietary flavonoid metabolites during chronic inflammation. Dr. Arts spent time as a research fellow at the School of Public Health, University of Minnesota in Minneapolis (USA), at the National Institute of Public Health and the Environment in Bilthoven (The Netherlands), and at the Department of Pediatrics, Uppsala University, Uppsala (Sweden).

 

Research interests

Effects of ATP administration in patients with cancer or inflammatory disorders; nutritional epidemiology (with emphasis on bioactive compounds like flavonoids); bioavailability and metabolism of natural compounds.

Dr. Els Swennen is currently working as a postdoc and is involved in the research on the effects of ATP in cancer and inflammatory diseases. She received an MSc in chemistry from Ghent University in 2001 and an MSc in Pharmaceutical biotechnology from the Ghent University in 2002. In 2007, she obtained her PhD at the department of Pharmacology & Toxicology and Epidemiology from Maastricht University. The title of her thesis was “ATP as a modulator of inflammation and oxidative stress”. In her recent postdoc project she is investigating the effects of ATP on the cytotoxicity of chemotherapeutics and radiotherapy in lung cancer cell lines.

Effects of ATP administration in patients with cancer or inflammatory and oxidative stress-related disorders.

Sandra Beijer is currently working as a researcher at the Department of Epidemiology and has executed the study ‘Application of adenosine 5’-triphosphate (ATP) infusions in palliative home care’. She is now analysing the data of this study for her PhD thesis. In 1988 she received her qualification from the schooling of Food and Dietetics and has worked as a dietician from 1988 till 1990 at the Leids Universal Medical Center and at the Community Care Organisation of Zoetermeer. From 1990 till 1995 she was appointed at the Comprehensive Cancer Center Eindhoven to write the books ‘Leidraad voor voedingsdeskundigen bij kanker’ and ‘Voedingsgids voor mensen met kanker’ and to develop the course ‘De oncologische patiënt en voeding’. She was also part-time employee at the cancer registry. From 1995 till 2001 she has worked as a dietician at the Universital Hospital Maastricht at the Departments of Head and Neck Surgery, Radiotherapy and Gastro-enterology. Furthermore, she is a member of the National Working Group of Oncology Dieticians and the Dieticians Working Group of the Comprehensive Cancer Center Limburg.

 

Research interests

Effects of ATP administration in patients with cancer or other chronic illnesses; clinical studies with nutrition with emphasis on clinical effects and clinical applicability.

Martijn Bours was born on July 31 1975 in Weert, The Netherlands. After having graduated from secondary school (VWO) in 1994 at the Phillips van Horne Scholengemeenschap in Weert, he studied Physiotherapy at the Hogeschool Zuyd in Heerlen, The Netherlands, from which he received his bachelor in 1999. Thereafter, he worked for a short period of time as a physiotherapist at the Division of Rehabilitation in the Atrium Medical Center Heerlen. In 2001, he received an MSc in Health Sciences from the University of Maastricht, The Netherlands. Since 2002, he is working at the Department of Epidemiology of Maastricht University.

 

Research interests

Martijn is currently involved in a 3-year research project on the role of purinergic receptor signalling in osteoporosis, which is part of a Seventh Framework European Union project. He is also involved in a research project on the efficacy of adenosine 5’-triphosphate (ATP) as an immunomodulatory treatment modality in rheumatoid arthritis.

Curriculum Vitae

Erik Coolen is currently working as a PhD student at the department of Epidemiology and the department of Pharmacology and Toxicology and is involved in research on the oral bioavailability of ATP. The research is embedded in Nutrition and Toxicology Research Institute Maastricht (Nutrim) and Graduate School for Advanced Studies in Food Technology, Nutrition and Health Sciences (VLAG). He received his MSc in Medical Biology from Radboud University (Nijmegen) in 2004. He did his research masters at the department of Psychoneuropharmacology at the Radboud University Hospital and at the department of Molecular Pharmacology at Organon N.V. in Oss.

Anke Wesselius is currently working as a PhD student at the department of Epidemiology and is involved in research on genetic polymorphisms in the purinergic receptor genes and osteoporosis risk. In 2006 she received an MSc in biomedical science from the Radboud University of Nijmegen. She did her research master of epidemiology at the National Institute of Public health and the Environment in Bilthoven and her research master of pathobiology at the department of genetics in Barcelona (Spain).
